Going into the final day of Royal Ascot, 7 of our 8 selections at the meeting have either won or placed — Bow Echo, Ombudsman, Nola Soul and Venetian Sun all winning, More Thunder, Jamestown and Emit all placing, with Radiant Beauty the single selection that didn’t fire. That’s a strike rate most would be happy with across an entire season, never mind one week!
Saturday is the final day of the meeting, and three more selections go into the book.
PICK 1: Ethical Diamond — Hardwicke Stakes (3:05) — 10/1 — 1pt Each-Way (3 places)
Ethical Diamond drops back into Group 2 company after running in the Longines Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan in March, where he finished fifth of six, beaten 7l by Calandagan over the same 1m4f trip. A four-time winner from 1m4f to 1m6f on ground ranging from good to firm to yielding, he’s also a course and distance winner already. Trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, this is a horse dropping in class with the form and the team to take advantage. At 10/1 each-way, with some firms paying three places, we think that’s overpriced.
PICK 2: Satono Reve — Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (3:40) — 7/2 — 1.5pts Win
Satono Reve travels from Japan with a serious profile — nine wins from 6f to 1m, and his latest run saw him beaten just 4½l into second by Ka Ying Rising in the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize at Sha Tin, a track and grade that doesn’t flatter. Trained by Noriyuki Hori with Ryan Moore taking the ride, the combination of fresh, unexposed-to-UK-eyes form and a top jockey booking gives this run a real edge. At 7/2, we’re backing him with conviction at 1.5pts win.
PICK 3: Completely Random — Wokingham Stakes (5:00) — 12/1 — 1pt Each-Way (6 places)
The Wokingham is the biggest cavalry charge of the week, and Completely Random is our value play in it. A winner of five races from 5f to 6f, he was beaten 6l in 10th of 28 over 7f last time out — dropping back to 6f today and wearing cheekpieces for the first time, both changes that point to an improved showing. Trained by Harry Charlton with Ryan Moore booked, the application of headgear alongside the drop in trip is exactly the kind of angle our model flags. At 12/1 each-way on six places in a field this size, that’s good cover.
