3.10 Thirsk — King’s Road Dandy

King’s Road Dandy is the bigger-priced play of the two and looks worth siding with each-way at 11/1, particularly with four places available.

This does not look like a race where we need to be overly aggressive, but King’s Road Dandy has enough going for him to make the price look interesting. He is still relatively lightly raced, so there is scope for improvement, and at double-figure odds we are not asking him to be a certainty — we are asking him to outrun his price and get seriously involved.

In a competitive handicap, the extra place angle matters. At 11/1, four places gives us the kind of shape we like: enough upside if he wins, but still a sensible return route if he runs well without quite landing the race.

4.40 Thirsk — Tattie Bogle

Tattie Bogle is the stronger win contender of the two, and at 6/1 with four places available, he still makes plenty of each-way appeal.

He comes into this with a more obvious profile and looks like one who should give us a proper run for our money. The price is shorter than King’s Road Dandy, but not too short for an each-way play given the available terms. This is exactly the kind of bet we like when the market still leaves enough room for value.

The key here is balance. Tattie Bogle does not need to be a spectacular price to be a good bet. At 6/1, with the extra places, he sits in that attractive zone where he has a credible chance of winning but still offers place protection if he runs well.
